Zurich is home to a vibrant array of community-driven initiatives that aim to strengthen social bonds, promote sustainability, and support integration. These organizations provide platforms for residents to connect, share resources, and contribute to the city’s dynamic social fabric.
Leu: Zurich’s Local Digital Currency
Since May 2022, the Leu has been enhancing Zurich’s local economy as a digital currency. By using Leu to purchase local products and services, residents support neighborhood businesses and foster a sustainable economic network. The initiative also promotes equal opportunities through a community basic income, ensuring all members receive the same financial support, regardless of background or status. Participation is straightforward: download the Encointer Wallet app, join community gatherings, and start earning Leu every ten days.
Zharity: Redistributing Resources to Those in Need
Zharity mobilizes community action by collecting, sorting, and redistributing gently-used goods to over 40 local community partners. This volunteer-driven organization not only keeps usable items out of the waste stream but also ensures they reach those who need them most. In addition to redistribution, Zharity provides essential items like hygiene products and reusable feminine pads, crafted by volunteers, to support community partners.
Hand4Hand: Integration with Integrity
Hand4Hand offers free assistance to individuals starting a new life in Zurich. By sharing experiences of daily life in Switzerland through their website, talks, and ‘Sip & Share’ events, they help newcomers find their own way. The organization collaborates with 17 partner organizations to provide accessible information, create spaces for meaningful connections, and foster a sense of belonging.
Zurich Together: Socializing and Networking
Zurich Together is an international social media community that brings together people from diverse backgrounds in and around Zurich. Since 2017, they have been organizing events such as meetups, parties, and weekend trips, creating opportunities for socializing, connecting, and making new friends. Whether you’re an expat or a local resident, Zurich Together offers a vibrant and inclusive social scene.
ExpoTranskultur: Celebrating Diversity
ExpoTranskultur believes in supporting volunteers’ projects that create spaces for connection, creativity, and community. They organize activities that bring people together, such as interactive coloring experiences for families, fostering a sense of belonging and celebrating the talent within the community.
These initiatives exemplify Zurich’s commitment to fostering a connected, inclusive, and sustainable community. By participating in or supporting these organizations, residents can contribute to the city’s vibrant social landscape and make a positive impact on their neighbors’ lives.
