Switzerland’s Commitment to Global Peacekeeping Efforts

Switzerland’s Commitment to Global Peacekeeping Efforts

Switzerland has long been recognized for its commitment to promoting peace and security worldwide. This dedication is evident through its active participation in various international peacekeeping missions, aligning with the nation’s humanitarian traditions and principles of neutrality.

Historical Involvement in Peacekeeping

Since 1953, Switzerland has been involved in peace support missions. The Swiss Armed Forces International Command (SWISSINT) oversees these operations, ensuring that Swiss personnel are effectively integrated into international efforts to maintain peace and stability.

Current Peacekeeping Missions

As of now, Switzerland contributes to several key peacekeeping missions:

SWISSCOY in Kosovo

Established in 1999, the SWISSCOY contingent supports NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR) by ensuring a safe and secure environment. This mission represents Switzerland’s largest peacekeeping operation to date.

EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Since 2004, Swiss military personnel have been part of the European Union Force (EUFOR) ALTHEA mission, contributing to the stabilization efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2027, Switzerland plans to increase its contribution by deploying an additional 12 armed military personnel to assist with transport tasks and staff work.

UNTSO in the Middle East

Switzerland has been participating in the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) since 1990, deploying unarmed military observers to monitor ceasefires in the Middle East. In 2021, Major General Patrick Gauchat became the first Swiss officer to head a UN peacekeeping operation when he was appointed as the Chief of UNTSO.

Training and Capacity Building

Beyond deployments, Switzerland invests in training and capacity building for peacekeeping. The SWISSINT Training Centre provides mission-specific training to Swiss military personnel and offers courses to international participants, enhancing global peacekeeping capabilities.

Commitment to Civilian Protection

Switzerland’s peacekeeping efforts also emphasize the protection of civilians in armed conflicts. The nation supports international peacekeeping operations that aim to create safer environments and protect civilians from violence, reflecting its dedication to humanitarian principles.

Through these multifaceted contributions, Switzerland continues to play a significant role in international peacekeeping, upholding its commitment to global stability and humanitarian values.
